Valentine REYRE (1889–1943). - Lot 124
Valentine REYRE (1889–1943). Reconstruction. 1916. Oil on panel, signed on the reverse and numbered “247P.” Titled and dated on a label on the back. (Crack.) Height: 27 cm; Width: 21 cm. Born in Paris in 1889, Valentine Reyre trained primarily under Georges Desvallières (1861–1950) and was part of Maurice Denis’s (1870–1943) circle. In 1916, deeply affected by the tragedies of World War I, she co-founded the L’Arche group alongside architect Maurice Storez (1875–1959) and sculptor Henri Charlier (1883–1975). This collective of artists and artisans advocated for a revival of Christian art by promoting a return to the sincerity of materials and the medieval corporative spirit. She continued her commitment by later participating in the Ateliers d’Art Sacré, founded in 1919.
