NAPOLEON I. L.S. "Napol", Saint-Cloud June 12, 1806, to Gene - Lot 226
NAPOLEON I. L.S. "Napol", Saint-Cloud June 12, 1806, to General LEMAROIS; the letter is written by MENEVAL; 1 page in-4 (small mourning border). Lemarois was then commander of the Adriatic coast at Ancona. "I would have preferred it if, instead of letting Cardinal Ruffo through [Fabrizio RUFFO (1744-1827) commanded the Santa Fede army that crushed the Parthenopean Republic], you had arrested him and sent him to Paris. From now on, if such a case arises again, detain the individual & ask me for orders. I am pleased to learn that you have put an end to the desertion of the Tour d'Auvergne battalion [partly composed of Germans]. If the Austrian vice-consul in Sinigaglia gives shelter to deserters, have him searched. - General LAURISTON has entered Ragusa, try to send him 10 thousand powder on light boats that will take care to avoid Russian cruises. Send the Poles and Corsicans to the King of Naples [his brother JOSEPH] if he asks for them. Have posts at Pescara and patrols constantly scouring the coast. It shouldn't be difficult for you to arm a few light boats to cruise around Dalmatia and Albania, which will be handed over to me, & bring me news"... Provenance: - Comte Le Marois (1802-1870), who communicated it for publication in the Correspondance de Napoléon Ier published by order of Emperor Napoléon III, no. 10353 [Correspondance générale, tome 6, no. 12289] ; - Then, by descent.
