Hashiguchi Goyō (1881-1921) - Lot 129
Hashiguchi Goyō (1881-1921) Oban tate-e, Onsen yado (温泉宿), Hot Spring Inn. Signed Goyō ga, engraver Koike Masazō/Seizō and Maeda Kentarō. Publisher Goyō hanga kenkyūjo Goyō Institute of Prints (五葉版画研究所). Dated Taisho 9 (July 1920), printed in 1952. Dim. 44.5 x 26.6 cm During the last years of his life, Goyo was tormented by an increasingly deteriorating state of health. When he died on February 24, 1921, at the age of 40, Goyō left many works unfinished. His nephew Hashiguchi Yasuo continued to publish his plates, but also had prints made from his sketches. This print was completed before his death, but not printed: thus, he had no control over the choice of colors. Yasuo therefore established the Association for Research into Goyō Prints (Goyō hanga kenkyūjo).
