Rare Ottoman dagger - Lot 163
Rare Ottoman dagger Turkey, Ottoman period, second half of 17th century Length: 36 cm Beautiful Ottoman dagger with engraved and partially gilded silver decoration. The curved, double-edged blade features gold damascened decoration on the heel. The wooden handle features a wide band of niello silver alternating engraved flowers and flowers on a niel background alternating engraved and negative fleurons. The handle cheeks and upper part are decorated with filigree elements set with glass paste stones, probably later additions. The upper part of the chape, not visible when the weapon is in its scabbard, is engraved with pairs of tulips. The scabbard, typical of the second half of the 17th century, is finished with a large spherical stinger with applied and nielloed silver elements. The lower part of the scabbard is decorated with applied plant reliefs. The chape is also decorated in relief with vegetal motifs, partly nielloed. The back of the scabbard features an abundance of engraved and nielloed vegetal decoration. The face of the scabbard has five cut sides: the end sides feature alternating floral and foliate niello cartouches, while the other two feature deep-engraved floral semis within cartouches, and the central side features negative floral decoration. The handle cheeks and upper part are adorned with filigree elements set with glass paste stones, and are probably later additions. A number of weapons of this shape are held in major international collections, including the Metropolitan Museum (Inv. 36.25.1037), Dresden (Inv. No. Y 120) and the Hermitage Museum (Inv. No. B.O.-296). EXPERT : Alexis RENARD
