GREAT BRITAIN. ARCTIC & POLAR MEDAL (1818-1855). Rare octagonal silver medal, with one star, by WYON. Awarded on the edge "W.B. BACHELOR BOATSWAINS MATE H.M.S PIONEER". 54 x 33 mm. Gross weight: 21 g. T.T.B. The " Bosco ", or boatswain, Bachelor was on the H.M.S Pionneer, a ship launched in 1850, whose original name was the Eider. The ship was abandoned in 1854 in the Arctic to Beechey Island on an expedition led by Edward BELCHER. Our medal is mentioned in "The Numismatic Circular, Volume 2, page 827, 1894. "The first Arctic discovery Medal (octagonal) 1818-1855 inscribed on the edge W.B. BACHELOR BOATSWAIN'S MATE H.M.S. PIONEER. A fine and rare medal. ". One finds trace of a William Robert (Le b correspondent perhaps to Bob) BACHELOR, having this rank on the Rionneer from 1852 to 1854. It is also mentioned Bachelor in " The white ribbon: a medallic record of British polar Expeditions ".
