Antony and Cleopatra, France, c. 1750 - Lot 53
Antony and Cleopatra, France, c. 1750 A fan known as a “full-flight” fan, opening to 180 degrees. The leather panel, lined with paper, is painted in gouache with a scene of a banquet bringing together a queen and a Roman emperor, likely evoking the story of Antony and Cleopatra. Venus, standing on a cloud to the right, presides over their destinies. The reverse side is painted with a scene depicting a woman and a young man meeting—perhaps Dido and Aeneas? Ivory frame (Elephantidae spp*). The ribs have been re-pierced and painted with seashell motifs. In the center, soldiers from the king’s army guard a fortress. (Signs of wear and restoration.) Height: 30 cm; Sheet height: 13.5 cm; Gross weight: 97.67 g * Note (//): A CITES certificate will be issued to the purchaser, allowing for free movement within the EU.
