LOS CARPINTEROS A sculpture depicting the history of the former Zurich-West industrial district Watercolor on paper, signed and dated 2003 in the lower right corner. Height: 253 cm; Width: 151 cm (with frame) Plexiglass display case (scratches) LOS CARPINTEROS (“The Carpenters”) is an artists’ collective founded in 1992 in Havana that places wood at the heart of its creative work. Originally formed by three Cubans who graduated in 1994 from the Higher Institute of Arts in Havana: Marco Antonio Castillo VALDES (born in 1971), Dagoberto Rodríguez SANCHEZ (born in 1969), and Alexandre Arrechea Jesús ZAMBRANO (born in 1970), the collective began its work while they were still students; in 2003, it became the Valdés-Sánchez duo. Both live and work in Havana and Madrid, creating works in Europe and the United States. Their installations and performances—complemented by watercolor drawings and videos that defy the laws of nature (featuring tools as large as brick towers)—question the functional aspect of architecture and design. Provenance: - Acquired directly from the artist
