Henri ANSPACH (1882–1979) The Black Mule, Cagnes 1927 Oil on panel, signed lower left, titled, dated, and located on the reverse. Height: 25 cm; Width: 35 cm Henri Anspach (Brussels, 1882–Portet-sur-Garonne, 1979) was a painter who changed careers after an Olympic fencing career that saw him win a gold medal for Belgium in the team épée event at the 1912 Stockholm Olympics. Following this victory, he studied painting at the Academy of Fine Arts in Liège under Léon Frédéric. He then moved to Paris, where he exhibited at the Salon des Artistes Français (1913), the Salon d’Automne (1920), and the Salon des Indépendants (1926–28), among others. Drawing on these Belgian and French influences, he developed a modern Impressionist style with a luminous palette, focusing on the tranquil atmosphere of everyday life and the light in landscapes.
