SÈVRES. Brachard covered porcelain teapot from the Éloge de la Rose luncheon, with cameo decoration of portraits of Guillaume de Lorris and Anacreon in circular medallions framed by rosebushes, captioned on the neck: Rosier blanc royal and Rosier à cent feuilles in a richly ornamented surround of rinceaux, palmettes, leafy branches and rosettes in gold, frieze of grecques on the neck, handle and spout with gold background. Marked: in blue Sèvres 32 and star in a medallion, in gold b.f. Mc 32. Louis-Philippe period, year 1832. (A small chip on the reverse edge of the lid). Height Height : 21 cm The Éloge de la Rose lunch set entered the Manufacture de Sèvres sales store on January 31, 1835 (Arch. Sèvres, Vz, f° 94, 50). It comprised a large oval platter of the first size, decorated by Leguay after Girodet, a teapot, a sugar pot, a milk jug and four cups and their saucers, all in the Brachard shape, and finally a lunch box. The décor features rose bushes and "cameo portraits of writers who have sung of roses". The Éloge de la rose lunch was presented by order of King Louis-Philippe to the Shah of Persia, Mohammad Shah Qadjar, on August 7, 1839 (arch. Sèvres, Vbb10, f° 4v). Appraisal sheet no. 5, dated January 31, 1835, shows that the painter of the figures for the Éloge de la Rose luncheon was Charles Antoine Didier, that the painter of the flowers was Pierre Antoine Sinson fils, that the gilding was done by Hilaire François Boullemier fils and that the ornaments were the work of Pierre Riton (archives Sèvres, PB9bis, 1835). This gift from the King marked the resumption of diplomatic relations between France and Persia in 1839, following the deterioration of relations between Great Britain and Persia. That same year, Mohammad Shah Qadjar sent a diplomatic mission headed by Mirza Hossein Khan to Louis-Philippe, seeking military support from France.
