Antwerp school circa 1530, entourage of the Master of 1518 ( - Lot 17
Antwerp school circa 1530, entourage of the Master of 1518 (interior shutters) and Rhenish school, entourage of Bartel BRUYN (outer panels) Two altarpieces with St. Veronica and St. Mary Magdalene On the back, St. Wenceslas and St. Benedict Pair of panels Height 89 cm; Width 25.5 cm With frame - Height 100 cm; Width: 36 cm The faux marble borders have been added. The commissioner of these panels probably commissioned them in two stages. He commissioned an Antwerp Mannerist painter to paint the interior shutters and probably the central panel, which has now disappeared. The artist is close to Jan de Beer, the Master of 1518 and the Master of Frankfurt; the luminous landscapes are reminiscent of those of Joachim Patinir. Saint Elizabeth wears a sumptuous costume with precious embroidery and an elaborate headdress. She holds before her an unfurled veil on which Christ's face miraculously appears. Her gesture is calm and solemn, highlighting the sacred relic she is presenting. In a second phase, this pair was entrusted to a German painter who created the portraits and their saints The one on the right shows a saint in armor, holding a coat of arms with the double-headed eagle, emblem of the Holy Roman Empire. Their style is reminiscent of Bartel Bruyn the Elder and the painters of the Colonnese school around 1530 (for example, the layout of Bruyn's Rink-Altar at the Alte Pinakothek). Exceptionally, some paintings begun in Antwerp could be finished in Cologne, especially if the commissioning artist was unable to travel to Cologne to have his or her portrait included, as many ships regularly sailed between the two cities at the time.
