Adrien VAN OSTADE (1610-1685). - Lot 12
Adrien VAN OSTADE (1610-1685). T Werck complet van den vermaarde Schilder Adriaan van Ostade, door hem setfs geinventeert en geest / OEuvre complet d'Adrien Van Ostade, Peintre célèbre Inventé & Gravé par luy-même. A small folio album (300 x 430 mm) containing the 52 etched plates from the print run by the Veuve Jean (late 19th century), preceded by a portrait of the artist engraved by J. Gole in the black manner. Good proofs on thin cream or buff vellum, glued at the corners, several per sheet. Fillets of margins. Modest hardback binding, faded. "The Ostade coppers passed entirely into the hands of Bernard Picart, a French artist who, in 1710, had retired to Holland with his father, Étienne Picart, le Romain. It was B. Picart was the first to produce a complete edition of our master's fifty plays; it was for this edition that he had the title engraved, which we find here following the portraits, as well as Ostade's portrait in the black manner, engraved by J. Gole, and the portrait of Ostade's mother, by P. Oust. When B. Picart published this edition, the plates in numbers 1 and 2 of the work were lost; he made very good copies of them; we know he had a particular talent for this. Around 1780, Ostade's copperplates were sold by Basan, an artist and dealer in one. This collection is described in the catalog of Basan's collection as follows: "L'œuvre d'Ostade, composé de 52 petits et moyens sujets, très-pittoresquement gravé à l'eau-forte par lui-même". The price is 24 livres. Finally, from Basan, Ostade's plates passed to Mme Vve Jean, who had a considerable collection of the engraver's old plates. The collection published by her consists of fifty-two plates printed on 22 infolio sheets, and a portrait of the master by J. Gole. The catalog price was 27 fr. On Jean's death, the copperplates were dispersed". (L.-E. Faucheux, Catalogue raisonné de toutes les estampes, qui forment l'œuvre gravé d'Adrien van Ostade, Paris, Vve Jules Renouard, 1862, p. XIV-XV.) In our album, among the 52 plates, we find copies of plates 1 and 2 of the work by Bernard Picart, as listed in Faucheux's catalog raisonné, as well as a copy of plate 28. No. 51 (Le Paysan qui pisse) is no longer attributed to van Ostade. Expert : Hélène BONAFOUS-MURAT.
