Marienburg Castle and the Hanover family, Austria, circa 188 - Lot 117
Marienburg Castle and the Hanover family, Austria, circa 1880-1890. Wooden fan with a black-and-white photograph of Marienburg Castle in Germany, owned by the Hanover royal family, in a frame of moss, ivy and forget-me-nots. Signed lower right "F. Theyer/in Wien" for the painter Franz Theyer, known for his portraits of royal families and the aristocracy. The reverse is illustrated with four portraits of the royal family of Hanover, including Marie, Princess of Saxe-Altenburg (1818-1907), and two of her children: Marie de Hanovre (1849-1904) and Ernest-Auguste (1845-1923). The frame is composed of pansies, eglantines and cyclamen, flowers symbolizing love and attachment. The composition is dominated by a miniature profile portrait of George V, the last King of Hanover (1819-1878). (Small stains.) Height Height : 24.5 cm. Marienburg Castle was a gift from George V to his wife in 1857. The king lost his throne in 1866 and took refuge in Austria until his death in 1878. Missing is the portrait of Frederika (1848-1926), the couple's second daughter, who married Baron Alphons von Pawel-Rammingen in Windsor in 1880. Its absence from the fan suggests that it may have belonged to her. The figure of the king in miniature also suggests that the king is represented, albeit deceased. Expert: Georgina Letourmy-Bordier
