ITALY, Deruta. - Lot 18
ITALY, Deruta. Rare large oval bowl on four claw feet with two handles, with polychrome decoration, in the background, of a mythological scene, the judgment of Paris, wearing a Phrygian cap, is seated under a tree and holding the apple, the goddesses Hera, Athena or Aphrodite standing around him, in the distance a landscape of fortified city and river. Above, Cupid flies and bends his bow. On the outer rim, a frieze of grotesques, fantastical animals and fruit baskets. Yellow border with gadroons and scrolls. Claw feet with yellow background. 17th century. (Cracks and knocks, chips and missing handles and feet). Height 13 cm; length: 46 cm. Cf: The Judgment of Paris depicts the young prince of Troy arbitrating a quarrel between the mother goddess Hera, the war goddess Athena and the goddess of love Aphrodite. The three goddesses are fighting over the golden apple that should go to the most beautiful, an apple thrown by Eris, goddess of discord, to punish them. Paris chooses Aphrodite, who promises him the love of the most beautiful woman. He kidnaps Helen, wife of the Spartan king Menelaus, triggering the Trojan War, the terrible conflict described in the Illiad and Odyssey. Expert: Manuela Finaz de Villaine
