Takahashi Hiroaki (Shōtei) (Japan, 1871-1945) - Lot 3
Takahashi Hiroaki (Shōtei) (Japan, 1871-1945)
Print, otanzaku tate-e, Tasogare plate, Twilight. Stamp of the artist Shotei. Circa 1920.
Height 32.7 cm; Width 17 cm.
This version first appeared in a photo album belonging to a member of the Weeks family who visited the new Watanabe Color Print Company in 1910 and purchased at least 30 copies of their woodblock prints.
This is therefore a pre-earthquake 1923 version of Kantô. Shotei then reproduced a third of its pre-earthquake production from 1936 onwards. In the post-earthquake version, the woman is alone carrying the bundle of wood, a more common composition.
