Pablo Picasso (1881-1973) and Paul Lemagny (1905-1977) - Lot 205
Pablo Picasso (1881-1973) and Paul Lemagny (1905-1977) Portrait of Picasso. 1956. Portrait engraved in burin by Lemagny, remarks in drypoint by Picasso. Copper: W. 275 x H. 395 mm. Bloch 823; Baer 955. Very fine proof on simili-japan, before the copper cut, annotated under the portrait "épreuve d'artiste" and signed by Lemagny in pencil, enriched with the engraved remark by Picasso and signed by him in red pencil. Broken folds at the edges of the folio, notably in the lower right-hand corner. Full margins. The portrait of Picasso was engraved by Lemagny for Jean Cocteau's book, Témoignage, Paris, Pierre Bertrand, 1956, in which the subject is drawn from the reduced copper. Our print is one of several made by the Moret workshops, before reduction of the copper, of which Brigitte Baer lists 32 proofs on simili-japon, 65 on vélin de Rives and a few artist's proofs like ours, signed by both artists. Expert: Hélène BONAFOUS-MURAT.
