Floris JESPERS (1889-1965) - Lot 115
Floris JESPERS (1889-1965) Clown in love Mixed media, eglomised glass, signed "jespers" lower right. Bears a label on the back "n° 2 - Clown - costume rouge". Height 80 cm; Width: 59 cm (dimensions when viewed) A Belgian painter and engraver born in Borgerhout, near Antwerp, Floris Jespers established himself as one of the major voices of the Flemish avant-garde of the XXᵉ century. Trained at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Antwerp, he quickly became an essential figure on the Belgian modernist scene, exploring a rich and vibrant pictorial language, where cubism, expressionism and symbolism intersect. Clowns occupy a singular place in his work. With their colorful, sometimes melancholy features, Jespers depicts human fragility and the tension between appearance and interiority, making these popular, poetic figures a reflection of his vision of the world.
