Lü XIAGUANG (1906-1994). - Lot 101
Lü XIAGUANG (1906-1994). Sparrow by a pond and bamboo, 1950. Gouache and ink on silk laid down on paper mounted on a stretcher. Signed, located and dated upper left. Drawn by Xiaguang, Paris, in April of the 38th year of the Republic. (Back covered by cardboard, preserved for protection, the color of the water has probably been insolated). Height 54 cm; Width: 32 cm. A former student of Xu Beihong (1895-1953), Lü Xiaguang is a Chinese painter known for his landscapes and animal representations. He moved to Paris in 1930, at the age of 24, to pursue his studies in Europe. Lü studied at the Beaux-Arts de Paris and in Brussels. He also married in France before returning to China in 1936 to put his artistic talent at the service of his country during the Sino-Japanese war. After the war, Lü Xiaguang returned to France in 1946, where he established himself as a painter and art dealer, building up a solid reputation. Several years later, Lü Xiaguang and his wife financed a studio for Chinese artists at the Cité Internationale des Arts in France. Over time, his business as a dealer took precedence over his artistic work. Nevertheless, the quality of his art continues to be recognized by many Asian collectors and Chinese art institutions, sensitive to the rarity of his works. In the 1990s, Lü donated a significant part of his collection of European and Chinese works of art to the Zhejiang Provincial Museum in Hangzhou. Expert : BRAME ET LORENCEAU.
