Jean FAUTRIER (1898-1964) - Lot 98
Jean FAUTRIER (1898-1964) Thistle flowers Oil on canvas, signed lower right, label on verso for loan to the Musée d'Art Moderne in 1964. Height : 27 cm ; Width : 35 cm Exhibition : - Jean Fautrier, Rétrospective, Musée d'Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris, April-May 1964, no. 6 Provenance : - Former Jean Paulhan collection; - Kept by his wife Germaine Pascal, née Dauptain, to this day. Jean Paulhan was director of the NRF from 1925 to 1940, and from 1953 until his death in 1968. A discoverer of many writers, his interest in painting developed especially during the Occupation. In 1942, he discovered Georges Braque, then Jean Dubuffet and Jean Fautrier, whose catalog he prefaced in 1943 for the exhibition organized by René Drouin's gallery in Paris. Jean Paulhan was an art collector, art critic and friend of many artists. His personal collection included many paintings by his friends, as well as portraits of himself and his wife by his contemporaries. The five paintings we are presenting have been preserved to this day by the descendants of his wife, Germaine Pascal. In 1974, the RMN organized a major exhibition devoted to this relationship with artists, "Jean Paulhan à travers ses peintres" ("Jean Paulhan through his painters").
