Louise ABBÉMA (1853-1927) - Lot 74
Louise ABBÉMA (1853-1927) Devant la mer (Presumed Portrait of Liane Degaby) Oil on canvas, signed and dated 1909 lower right. (Damage and missing parts.) Height 129.5 cm; Width: 162.5 cm. A particularly prominent female figure in the artistic panorama of her generation, Louise Abbéma trained in prestigious workshops, including those of Carolus-Duran and Henner. Her friendship with Sarah Bernhardt, and the portraits she painted of the actress who became her companion, contributed to her success and renown. Louise Abbéma was regularly exhibited at the Salon from 1876 onwards, where her works won over visitors and critics alike. At the 1900 Universal Exhibition, she was awarded a medal, followed a few years later by a cross of the Légion d'honneur. Along with Rosa Bonheur, she became one of the first women artists to receive this distinction. A close friend of Claude Monnet, whose influence is felt in her work, Louise Abbéma produced some ambitious compositions, like our canvas, which combines portraiture, genre scenes and landscapes. The date and large format of our painting may allow us to identify it with "Au bord de la mer", which the artist exhibited at the 1909 Salon in Paris. By family tradition, it would represent Diane Laval-Degaby dite Liane Degaby, actress, model and wife of Gironde industrialist André Laval - a close associate of the Rosicrucians. Liane was associated with many artists, and posed for Alfred Boucher's sculptures "La Rêverie" and "Minerve s'armant", shown at the Salon in 1912. We also know that Louise Abbéma painted a portrait of her that was exhibited at the 1925 Salon.
