Chirvan Seikour rug (warp, weft and wool pile), Northeast Ca - Lot 77
Chirvan Seikour rug (warp, weft and wool pile), Northeast Caucasus. Circa 1900-1950. (Small accidents, slight wear and fraying) Length : 431 cm ; Width : 221 cm. This elongated "kellei" rug features a series of four St. Andrew's crosses on a bronze background with geometric floral motifs. The main red border with geometric flower garlands is framed by two counter-borders. "The term Chirvan designates both a type of carpet and a region where many carpets are produced. It's a vast, mountainous region, inhabited by a heterogeneous population. It stretches from the Black Sea to the Caspian Sea, forming a natural barrier between Europe and Asia. Chirvans rugs are knotted in cities (Kuba, Dagestan...) and villages (Tchi tchi, lesghi, seikour, Pérépédil.....). Bibliographical reference: SABAHI, T - Splendeurs des tapis d'Orient, Éd.
