Senneh rug (cotton warp and weft, wool pile), Northwest Pers - Lot 67
Senneh rug (cotton warp and weft, wool pile), Northwest Persia. Circa 1850-1880. (Slight wear, old restorations and fraying.) Length: 50 cm; Width: 50 cm. The town of Senneh or Sanandaj has long been renowned for the finesse of its carpets, both in terms of knotting and weaving execution and decorative motifs. Kurdistan wool is long and lustrous, but dry and rough, accentuated by short shaving. Senneh carpets are finely knotted, often with a silk warp and a single, tightly-woven cotton weft. This small octagonal rug features a large plain tobacco octagon set off by a small navy-blue octagon decorated with a herati motif. Both octagons are surrounded by a narrow blue-green border with flower garlands. The entire composition is framed by a small red border with flower garlands.
