Famous for his works documenting the Paris of yesteryear, Eugène Galien-Laloue strove, throughout his output, to render the Parisian atmosphere, and in particular the hustle and bustle of the Grands Boulevards, with an impressionist touch.
Although the subject is a common sight in the painter's work, namely the Place de la République in Paris, the scene is particularly rare for its nocturnal, festive vision. The palette used also adds its own touch of originality, as it is diametrically opposed to the grisaille frequently represented in the painter's work.
