Galerie Malaquais, Paris, 2008, model listed under cat. no. 6, pp. 84-87. In 1904, Charles Malfray settled in Paris, on the Butte Montmartre, thanks to a ten-year pension from the city of Orléans. He entered the École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts and frequented the circles of avant-garde artists. Mobilized during the First World War, the sculptor witnessed the horror of the trenches. It was during this period that he carved his first wooden version of Silence, which he used as a medicine box. Later, Malfray produced two versions in terracotta and bronze, one with rock and the second without rock, based on the model he had sculpted in clay in 1918. This work is part of the artist's body of work evoking the theme of war. With this figure of a man huddled in on himself, nestled against a rock likened to the wall of a trench, the sculptor wanted to represent "the idea of anguish and suffocation of man cornered by the horror of war".
