In 1937, the art dealer Ambroise Vollard recalled Pierre Bonnard, at the turn of the century, kneading breadcrumbs between his fingers in the shape of a small dog. "But tell me, Bonnard, does this look like sculpture to me? (...) Why don't you make me some statuettes? With this encouragement, Pierre Bonnard modelled a few figures and reliefs. Around 1901-1902, he confided to Maurice Denis: "I've started sculpting, but I don't yet know if my product is of any interest. I'm still in the roughing-out stage". A photograph taken in the artist's studio around 1904-1905 shows a sketch of Printemps next to Bonnard reading while standing. Although the work was probably produced around this time, the terracotta edition was produced posthumously, between 1969 and 1971, on the initiative of his heirs. The thirteen proofs are marked with the initial of each heir; our copy bears the monogram "B". Expert : Cabinet LACROIX-JEANNEST
