Tsuchiya Kōitsu (Japan, 1870-1949) - Lot 110
Tsuchiya Kōitsu (Japan, 1870-1949) Print, oban tate-e, Yuki no Katada Ukimidō (雪の堅田浮見堂), Snow on the Ukimidō in Katada. Signed Kōitsu and stamped Shin. Dated Spring of Showa 9 (1934). Publisher Watanabe Shōzaburō and stamp. Dim. 38.9 x 26.4 cm In this beautiful winter landscape, snow is falling in heavy flakes on the Ukimido at Katada pavilion on Lake Biwa, covering the trees framing the temple in a white mantle. A single lantern, its warm light reflected in the water, warms the atmosphere. The Ukimodo pavilion, literally "the floating temple", is located within Mangetsuji temple and is famous for featuring in one of Omi's eight views: The Return of the Geese to Katada. The current pavilion, erected in 1937, recreates the atmosphere of the original.
