Utagawa Kunisada (Toyokuni III) (Japan, 1786-1865) - Lot 43
Utagawa Kunisada (Toyokuni III) (Japan, 1786-1865) Triptych of prints, oban tate-e, from the series Tōto meisho yūkan (東都名所遊観), Excursions to famous places in Edo, plate Kisaragi Massaki (衣更着 真崎), The second month: Massaki. Signed Ichiyōsai Toyokuni ga and Kōchōrō Toyokuni ga. Publisher Senkakudo. Nanushi censor stamp (Small holes). Dim. 37.6 x 25.8 cm In this triptych, three beautiful women stroll along the west bank of the Sumida River, north of the Hashiba ferry, an area known as Massaki. In this neighborhood is a temple dedicated to Inari, the fertility deity celebrated on the first day of the horse in February (hatsu-uma). It's possible that the three women are on their way to the temple for the festivities, given the title of the triptych, which mentions the second month. Reference: A similar triptych in the National Diet Library, Tokyo, no. 024153429.
