Throughout his life, he maintained a passion for travel and sunny lands: the Basque Country, Spain, Asia, the West Indies, Africa, North Africa, Polynesia and so on.
In 1922, he was appointed official painter to the French Navy. Paul Valéry dubbed him "the admiral of painters, the painter of admirals". The Musée de la Marine holds several works by this brilliant colorist.
