Chirvan Lesghi rug (warp, weft and wool velvet), Caucasus, c - Lot 241
Chirvan Lesghi rug (warp, weft and wool velvet), Caucasus, circa 1900
(Slight wear, small accidents and old restorations.)
Length: 332 cm; Width: 103 cm
The carpet is decorated with a series of seven red and ivory cruciform medallions on a navy blue background with small polychrome geometric motifs. An ivory border with multicolored serrated leaves is framed by four counter-borders.
"The term Chirvan designates both a type of carpet and a region where a great many carpets are produced. In fact, it's a vast, mountainous region inhabited by a heterogeneous population. It stretches from the Black Sea to the Caspian Sea, forming a natural barrier between Europe and Asia.
Chirvan carpets are knotted in cities (Kuba, Dagestan...) and villages (Tchi tchi, Lesghi, Seikour, Pérépédil.....).
