Captioned lower left in the margin: "Dessin de Girardet/Monument qui devait être élevé dans l'église de l'hôpital de Commercy pour y recevoir le coeur de la princesse El.Charl. d'Orléans, veuve duc Léopold de Lorraine" ("Girardet drawing/Monument to be erected in the church of the Commercy hospital to receive the heart of Princess El.Charl. d'Orléans, widow of Duke Léopold of Lorraine").
Élisabeth-Charlotte d'Orléans died on December 23, 1744. The next day, her entrails were taken with great ceremony to the Hôpital Saint Charles, where they were buried before the main altar. On December 27, the heart was in turn interred at the Hôpital Saint Charles. His body was buried on February 19 in Nancy, in the Cordeliers vault.
