Utagawa Toyokuni (1769-1825) - Lot 49
Utagawa Toyokuni (1769-1825)
Two uchiwa-e, from the Imaya jūnikagetsu series (今様十二ヶ月), Modern beauties through the twelve months, plate Chūka no zu
(仲夏之圖), Full Summer. Signed Toyokuni ga, publisher Ibaya Senzaburō (Dansendō), kiwame censor stamp. 1822.
Size: Front: 21.9 x 28.7 cm
Size: Rear: 21.8 x 28.8 cm
These two uchiwa-e were designed for the two sides of an uchiwa, a rigid fan, and are part of a series dedicated to beautiful women in various activities over the months. The two sides of the fan form a single scene. The front depicts a woman descending the stairs of a brothel on a humid summer's night, just after lights out. On the reverse, the mosquito net depicted is a very common motif evoking summer. The woman is covering her mouth with the paper used by courtesans to clean their private parts after visiting clients. At the back, the mosquito net reveals a tray on which is placed used paper of the same type.
