Kitagawa Utamaro (1753-1806) - Lot 39
Kitagawa Utamaro (1753-1806)
Triptych, oban tate-e, Karitaku no kinuginu (仮宅の後朝), The Day After Tomorrow in the Temporary Lodgings of the Pleasure District. Signed Utamaro hitsu, publisher Moriya Jihei. 1800. (Small wormholes restored).
Dim. each approx. 37.6 x 24.8 cm
Karitaku or temporary dwellings were built when Yoshiwara suffered from fires, as was the case during the 2nd month of 1800. These dwellings were built in the Yama no Shuku district, as evoked by the Sumida and Mimeguri Shrine torii visible in the background of the left panel. This triptych represents the second floor of the temporary lodgings and illustrates the departure of guests after a night spent in the house of pleasure. On the left panel, a group of courtesans greet guests as they descend the stairs. A bowl and toothbrush have been placed on the windowsill, indicating a morning scene. On the center board, a young woman holds a mirror in her hands, admiring her make-up. At her feet, a servant tries to attract the attention of a young man on the right-hand board. On the latter, a courtesan lies on the floor, giving a letter to the same young man still lying under the mosquito net, smoking a pipe.
