Kitagawa Utamaro (1753-1806) - Lot 36
Kitagawa Utamaro (1753-1806) Oban tate-e, from the series Chūshingura (忠臣蔵), The Treasure of Loyal Servants, plate Hachidanme (八段目), Act VIII. Signed Utamaro hitsu, publisher Nishimurara Yohachi. Circa 1801-1802 (Minor restoration). Dim. 38.1 x 25.1 cm This print illustrates Act VIII, in which Tonase and his daughter Konami travel to Kyoto to save Konami's marriage to Rikiya, the son of the rōnin chief, Oboshi Yuranosuke. Konami and Rikya were engaged, but Rikiya knew that the rōnin's quest for revenge would lead to his death, and he broke off the engagement. Tonase and Konami, depicted in the cartouche at top left, travel the Tōkaidō road from which Mount Fuji is visible. This scene is juxtaposed with a scene in the Yoshiwara: two young women walk past a storefront whose noren depicts Mount Fuji. References This print appeared in the exhibition The Riddles of Ukiyo-e.
