Kitagawa Utamaro (1753-1806) - Lot 33
Kitagawa Utamaro (1753-1806)
Oban tate-e, Daimonjiya uchi Hitomoto (大文字屋内 ひともと), Hitomoto of the Daimonjiya, kamuro Senkaku and Banki. Signed Utamaro hitsu, publisher Wakasaya Yoichi (Jakurindō). (Restorations).
Dim. 37.4 x 24.6 cm
Hitomoto was a high-ranking oiran of the Daimonjiya pleasure house. Utamaro depicts her here wearing an elaborate high bun in hyōgo date style recognizable by its two hulls. She is holding a tobacco pipe. In another print, Utamaro depicts her smoking, indicating that she was certainly known for her taste for tobacco, a practice introduced in the 16th century by Europeans. Her oiran status is evident from the fact that two kamuro are assigned to her, and their names are indicated on the print. The woman behind her turns out to be a shinzo helping her adjust her kimono.
