Katsukawa Shunshō (1726-1792) - Lot 10
Katsukawa Shunshō (1726-1792) Triptych, hosoban tate-e, Iwai Hanshirō IV as Inubōmaru, Ichikawa Monnosuke II as Asahina Saburō and Segawa Kikunojō III (Senjo) as Ninomiya from the play Soga musume chōja (曾我娘長者), The Virtuous Daughter of the Soga Clan. Signed Shunsho ga, publisher Keiundō. (Rousseurs). Dim. each approx. 32.7 x 15.1 cm The story of the Soga brothers' revenge and devotion to their father inspired numerous theatrical adaptations. From the 1730s, it was ordered that plays about the Soga brothers be performed in Edo during the New Year festivities, and the play illustrated here was one of them. The characters embodied on this triptych are, from right to left: Iwai Hanshirō IV (1747-1800) as Inubomaru, the younger son of the evil Kudo Suketsune the Colossus; Ichikawa Monnosuke II (1743-94) as Asahina Saburo, an ally of the Soga brothers, here in the guise of the boatman; and Segawa Kikunojō III (1751-1810) as Ninomiya, the Soga brothers' sister. Apparently, at one point in the play, the three characters share a boat, with Asahina playing the role of the boatman. Naturally, playwrights took many liberties in their adaptations.
