Suzuki Harunobu (1725-1770) - Lot 3
Suzuki Harunobu (1725-1770) Chuban tate-e, from the Zashiki hakkei series (座敷八景景), Eight Views of the Parlour, plate Ōgi no seiran (扇の晴嵐嵐), Breeze of the Mountains carried by the Fan. Unsigned. Circa 1766. Dim. 27.4 x 20 cm An adolescent girl dressed in a furisode refreshes herself with her fan, accompanied by a maid. For this series, Harunobu was inspired by the eight poems by Yuensai Teiryū (1654-1734) that reshape the Eight Views of Ōmi, a classical theme evoking the eight famous viewpoints of Lake Biwa east of Kyoto. The environment of this scene is evoked by the movement of the fan, and becomes clear when we refer to Teiryū's poem: On a hot day, the sunbeams pass through the fine material, of the fan, painted of the wind's voice in the pines. At least three editions of this series are known. The first was financed by the samurai and aesthete Okubo Jinshirō Tadanobu (1727-77). The second, to which this print belongs, bears neither signature nor seal. References This print appeared in the exhibition The Riddles of Ukiyo-e.
