Joseph-Antoine BERNARD (1866-1931) - Lot 259
Joseph-Antoine BERNARD (1866-1931) Female torso Model created in 1909 Bronze with green patina Signed "J. Bernard Bears the founder's stamp "CIRE / PERDUE / A. A. HEBRARD". Total height: 31 cm, including marble base, height. Height : 3 cm Provenance: Jacques & Michèle GINEPRO Collection Related literature : - René Jullian, Joseph Bernard, Saint-Rémy-les-Chevreuses, Éd. Fondation de Coubertin, 1989, model listed under n° 141, p. 297. This female torso is derived from the study of the Gloire figure for the Monument aux Morts de l'Aviation project (plaster model destroyed in 1921). This fragmentary representation of a woman's torso, with a patriotic chant rising from her open mouth, testifies to the artist's creative process, turned towards the succession of variants of a work, reworking partial elements. Thus, his work on another monumental work undertaken in his youth, Le Monument à Michel Servet, is an opportunity to extract other subjects, such as the figures of Remord or Michel Servet, or the groups of Tendresse and Jeunesse charmée par l'Amour. The bronze edition of this model, limited to 50 copies, was entrusted to Hébrard and met with great success. When the catalog raisonné was published in 1989, the highest number known was 26.
