Angel ZARRAGA Y ARGÜELLES (1886-1946) - Lot 29
Angel ZARRAGA Y ARGÜELLES (1886-1946) Nude back with shell, 1933 Pencil on paper, signed and dated lower right (Wear and small accidents.) Height 44 cm; Width: 61 cm A poem "Olvido la estrella... "written upper right and signed indistinctly. Provenance : - Private collection Born in Mexico, where he studied at the San Carlos Academy, Angel Zarraga spent a large part of his career in France. He was particularly noted for the decorations he created for the cathedral in Monterrey (Mexico) and for a number of liners, including the Normandie and the Queen Elizabeth. Dated 1933, this drawing, heir to the academic Venuses of French art, prefigures the canvas with modern lines he presented in the competition organized to decorate the salons of the liner Ile de France in the 1930s. This important theme in his body of work gave rise to several interpretations, including one entitled "Desnudo con caracol", auctioned several years ago at Sotheby's.
