Athenian in patinated bronze and gilt bronze, the brass basi - Lot 282
Athenian in patinated bronze and gilt bronze, the brass basin resting on a tripod base with braces surmounted by busts of Egyptian women, the hocked feet supported by a triangular plinth. Second third of the 19th century. (Minor accidents.) Height 93 cm; Diam. 36 cm This Athenian is directly inspired by an antique piece of furniture known as the Giberville tripod (Musée des Beaux-arts, Caen), which was discovered in either 1812 or 1829. However, it was not engraved until 1832, which allows us to date our Athenienne to the second third of the 19th century. The principle of the antique busts above the crosspieces is repeated, with the same system of attachment to the uprights and connecting discs, as are the hocked legs, though simplified on the piece shown. The idea of the Athenian cross-brace was already well established in the history of furniture in the modern era, since it appears as early as 1797 in an anonymous drawing preserved in the Musée Carnavalet in Paris (Au temps des merveilleuses, cat. exp., Musée Carnavalet, Paris, 2005, p. 180).
