Aurore DUPIN known as George SAND (1804-1876) - Lot 41
Aurore DUPIN known as George SAND (1804-1876) From a snuffbox Watercolor, dated 1846 and annotated "d'après une tabatière" ("after a snuffbox") Height 15.2 cm; Width: 12.5 cm Bibliography Christian Bernadac, George Sand, dessins et aquarelles, Éditions Belfond, 1992, p. 112, no. 177 described and reproduced George Sand had been drawing since childhood, like other young women of her time, but with a passion that would stay with her for the rest of her life. Portraits, country scenes, souvenirs of her travels - drawing was her companion and a source of great joy. She could have been a renowned painter had she not become a writer. Late in life, she invented a watercolor process of her own, which she called "dendrite", compositions based on stains and other chance shapes, enhanced or not with watercolor. Her work remains little known, however, and is mostly held in private collections. EXPERT: Élisabeth MARÉCHAUX
