Gustave CARIOT (1872-1950) The roadstead,... - Lot 24 - Audap & Associés
Gustave CARIOT (1872-1950) The roadstead, Perros-Guirec Oil on canvas, signed lower left and dated 1908 (Small accidents, wear to the canvas.) Height : 65 cm 65 cm ; Width : 80,5 cm In the early 1890s, René du Pré de Saint-Maur, one of the developers of the Trestrignel beach area, built the house Pen ar C' hastel at the Pointe du Château, which was destroyed during the war. In 1907, Gustave Cariot stayed in the vicinity of Perros-Guirrec and admired this villa, nestled at the foot of a rocky spur that separates the cove of Perros from the bay of Trestrignel. He immortalized this landscape in which the light and the wind animate a maritime panorama with waves hemmed in white, rocks shaded in purple, and vegetation covered with bold shades. The palette of this great colorist places his canvas on the borders of impressionism and pointillism and shines through the abundance of his brushstrokes. Probably captivated by the colors of this site, Cariot painted another view of the villa, of a smaller format and taken from a different angle, sold at auction in Paris in 2022.
