Pestle with double bird's head The oblong... - Lot 68 - Audap & Associés
Pestle with double bird's head The oblong base is convex. It is surmounted by a handle decorated at the top with two stylized bird heads with large circular eyes, facing back to back. This object, beyond its functional aspect of grinding herbs, is linked to the cohoba ritual and the preparation of the hallucinogenic substance that allows the cacique or shaman to enter into a trance. The animal theme of this drumstick correlates with the symbolism of this ceremony which serves to create a link between men and spirits. The quality of its execution and the sobriety of its lines make it a fine example of Taino art.
