CHINA. - SUITE OF SIXTEEN (SIC) PRINTS REPRESENTING THE CONQUESTS OF THE EMPEROR OF CHINA. Paris, chez l'Auteur [Isidore-Stanislas Helman] et chez M. Ponce, [1788]; very large oblong in-folio (405 x 535 mm), antique ivory half vellum boards, paper missing on one cover.

EXTREMELY RARE PUBLICATION. It includes not 16 but 23 prints (out of 24, lacking no. 6), plates 18-19-20 joined to form a triptych. These large figurations were wanted by the emperor Kien-Lung. The Jesuit fathers transcribed into drawings the paintings made on the spot (military scenes and great events of the imperial court) and had them engraved on copper by Isidore-Stanislas Helman in France. The entire edition was sent to China.
Title leaf wrinkled with a tear at one corner. Marginal wormholes sometimes important not reaching the compositions but sometimes affecting the legends. Smudging on two leaves. Spotting on the edges.
Bound in the suite: ABBREVIED HISTORY OF THE MAIN TRAITS OF THE LIFE OF CONFUCIUS, famous Chinese philosopher, decorated with 24 prints in-4 after the original drawings of China sent to Paris by Mr. Amiot, minister in Peking.
Each of these two volumes includes an engraved title leaf (the second one an additional leaf of dedication to Madame [the countess of Provence] and 24 plates printed with here the engraved text opposite (thanks to the oblong folio format). In the ordinary edition the texts and the separate engravings follow one another forming two volumes of 49 and 50 leaves in-4.
