Trunk for the bedroom of the Dauphine Marie-Antoinette, future Queen of France and wife of King Louis XVI.
Made of wood, trimmed with leather, with a rounded lid, reinforced and barded with studded wrought iron bands, and trimmed with wide wooden protection bands. With inscription on the lid in small brass studs " CHAMBRE DE ME LA DAUPHINE N° 4 ". Closing by two locks with wrought iron keys. Transportable by two strong folding handles in wrought iron.
Marked in ink on the front " A MA " (or " MO ").
Circa 1770-1774.
Height : 49 cm. 49 cm ; Length : 112 cm ; Depth : 52 cm
B.E. (Restorations of the interior trim; the nails of the inscription have been changed, except one, and put back in their original places. Some cracks and accidents).
Provenance:
- By family tradition: Hippolyte Charles (1772-1832), captain of hussars, lover of Josephine de Beauharnais, owner of the Messance castle in Génissieux (Drôme).
- Preserved in the collections of the Charles-Messance family and by descent to the current owner.
