STENDHAL. History of painting in Italy. By M. B[eyle] A[ncien] A[uditeur?], Paris, P. Didot l'aîné, 1817, 2 vols. in-8, contemporary bindings in midnight blue half-chagrin, spine ribbed with gilt fillets. First edition dedicated to "To the Happy Few", published on a self-publishing basis. Stendhal having lost the first manuscript of this work during the retreat from Russia, in 1812, rewrote it and published it five years later. From the libraries of Georges Vandaele (bookplate) and of the Château de Villequier (stamp) of Baron d'Acher de Montgascon.
