FÉNELON François de Salignac de La Mothe-. Directions for th - Lot 16
FÉNELON François de Salignac de La Mothe-. Directions for the conscience of a king, composed for the instruction of Louis of France, Duke of Burgundy. The Hague, Jean Neaulme, 1748; in-12, contemporary binding in tiger calf, smooth spine decorated with gilt designs.
Very careful edition published a few months after the first one by the same publisher. Beautiful portrait of the author, title vignette and head engraved on copper.
An amateur of the time has gilded on the back of the binding: "LE TEMPS PERDU". Under this pre-Proustian formula, a malignant intention may be hidden: the disavowal of a work considered as uninteresting.
