BUFFON Georges-Louis Leclerc de. Les Époques de la Nature. P - Lot 11
BUFFON Georges-Louis Leclerc de. Les Époques de la Nature. Paris, Imprimerie royale, 1785; 2 vol. in-8 of [2] ff. 234 p. and 6 plates; [2] ff. 260 p., 2 folded maps, contemporary marbled basane bindings, spines decorated with gilt designs. Very rare surreptitious edition of a classic of geology seen as the culmination of all Buffon's work. First published in 1774 in the Supplément à l'histoire naturelle (volume V), the text appeared in two pirate editions bearing the mention Imprimerie royale but both printed outside of France, this one also bearing "Deuxième édition". Its rarity is confirmed by the fact that it does not appear in the extensive Bibliography of Buffon published (by Georges Heilbrun) by the Museum of Natural History in 1952. The illustration includes 2 REPLICATED MAPS AND 6 ENGRAVED PLATES ON COPPER.
