Biography :
Born in Digne in 1883, Louis Botinelly began his apprenticeship in his family's studio in 1895, before entering the École des Beaux-Arts de Marseille in 1900.
In 1902, the city of Marseille offered him a travel grant. At the age of 19, his eyes full of dreams, he left for Italy. He returned amazed by the masterpieces he had seen.
In 1905, he entered the École des Beaux-Arts de Paris and joined the studio of Parisian sculptor Jules Coutan (1848-1939).
Proud of his southern origins, he received numerous commissions in Marseille and Provence for both civil and religious projects. In addition to the official projects in which he took part (Marseille Chamber of Commerce and railway station, 1931 Exhibition, etc.), his patrons included personalities such as businessman Paul Ricard.
Many of Louis Botinelly's works are now housed in museums (Musée des Beaux-Arts de Marseille, Musée des Années 30 de Boulogne...) and can be seen in public spaces such as the esplanade of Marseille's Gare Saint-Charles, Cathédrale la Major, parvis de l'église des Réformés, escalier d'honneur de la mairie de Marseille, salon d'honneur du Tribunal de commerce...).
