LONGUS. Daphnis and Chloe. Complete translation according to the manuscript of the Ab[b]aye of Florence. Printed in Florence, by Piatti, 1810; in-8 of 152 p., [1] f., antique tan basane binding, gilt fillets on the boards, spine with gilt designs, entirely untrimmed (R. Gaschet). Translation of Amyot made at the expense and by the care of Paul-Louis Courier who placed in it, page 16-22, a fragment of the novel found by him in Florence and translated by him in the style of Amyot. But Courier had inadvertently spilled ink on the manuscript, making it illegible. Doubts arose, reproaches then quarrels followed by a trial, which led the Court to seize 27 of the 61 copies and probably to destroy them. Edition of 61 copies in beautiful typography on Italian laid paper. - The presence of two copies in this catalogue does not prevent the book from being extremely rare.
