Jean-Louis PAGUENAUD (1876-1952) Indochinese Landscape Oil on panel, triptych, signed lower left of the left and right panels (Stains, glass holes, small accidents.) Originally from the Limousin but first raised in Algeria, Jean-Louis PAGUENAUD (1876-1952) was trained at the School of Decorative Arts in Limoges and at the Académie Julian where he is said to have been a student of Bouguereau. All his life, he kept a passion for travel and the countries of the sun: Basque Country, Spain, Asia, West Indies, Africa, North Africa, Polynesia etc. In 1922, he was appointed official painter of the Navy. Paul Valéry nicknamed him "the admiral of painters, the painter of admirals". The Musée de la Marine holds several works by this brilliant colorist.
