PAGE-BY-PAGE DESCRIPTION AVAILABLE IN THE IMAGES ILLUSTRATING THIS LOT (ONLINE) Girardet is the son of Girardet Lingier de Sar, and the great-niece of painter Charles Mellin, Nicole Thérèse Mavelot. A pupil of Claude Charles, he left to perfect his skills in Italy, in Florence from 1737 to 1744, under the protection of Duke François III of Lorraine, later Grand Duke of Tuscany and Emperor. On his return, he worked in Commercy for Élisabeth-Charlotte d'Orléans, for whom he prepared the funeral mausoleum. In 1758, he was appointed first painter to the King of Poland, Stanislas Leszczynski, and painted many of his portraits. In 1752, Girardet opened a drawing school in Lunéville, where many students followed in his footsteps. Our album is a fine testimony to his teaching, featuring numerous copies of masters produced both in Italy and in the studio.
